Used Programmes

Throughout the procedure of editing the footage we gained, the group used a usefull programme known as ' Final Pro Cut', this was due to the possotive feedback it has recieved from previouse users but also the professional qualities it holds. It allowed us to distribute our footage into place so that it flowed perfectly. Its features enabled us to add a soundtrack, monitor the lighting, add titles and many more, hopefully this relativly easy programme helped us on our way to a satisfactory grade.

This is a brief overview of what the programme looked like, it was clear and enabled us to construct the production just the way we wanted it.

This programme, Blogger.com is essential in this project. Obtaining information about planning, editing, background information, the production itself and much more we have published it onto our page. Thankfully it has been generously easy to work with ...

Directors Comentary - Misunderstood

This is a directors Comentary on 'Misunderstood' spoken by Leah Fraser. It gives a clear yet breif overview of the production yet mainly focuses on the important shots used when filming. The conclusion of the production is left at a cliffhanger therefore allows the audience to interpret there own ending. Hopefully this provides an understanding of the production and the shots and why we chose them.

Storyboard

We created a rough storyboard on paper in order to develop our ideas and to make our sequence more unstandable for us. We were able to record the certain shots we wanted at each particular scene as well as the music and mise en scene.
We focused on the main shots that will be in our sequence and thoroughly explained them, starting of with a sketch of the main character Leah about to walk down the stairs this was shown in a Low angle shot, the lighting was dark in this shot with a little light shinning threw the mosiac windows in the chappel hall where we recorded. To start this off there was no background sound what so ever which created a earie atmosphere.

This ran into an over the shoulder shot of an unknown number ringing Leahs mobile phone, it showed this clearly and was understandable, The lighting in this shot was natural and realistic, showing a brighter light coming from the mobile. No background music was played in this shot which still kept the earie atmosphere around.

Establishing/ long shot of leah walking down the aile of the chapel, looking insecure and worried. Naturalistic lighting and the background sound just begining to start playing, this builds up tension for the audience as the music begins to get louder the closer she gets to the alter.

Extreme close up of mobile, showing information and making it clearler for the audience. A visible text "ill see you tonight.. " clearly apparent and background music is playing at a quite pace.

After a while as gone.. An Establishing long shot opens of Leah paceing threw a field, shown in a coat and scarf, which makes the atmosphere more cold and pulls more tension to the character. Dark lighting and back ground music still playing. A full view of nature behind the character, more effective.

medium close up of a boot stepping on the styes.. shows a quick get away and focusing on the boot and styes only, this is shown when everything else around these objects are very dark compared to the lighting on them. Naturalistic sound eg. wind, and the background music still playing

Close up shot of Leah lookign anxious shows the fear she holds and is clear somethings bothering her. The voice overs here also adds to the tension and makes it clear that something is defineitly playing on her mind. Natural lighting but highly noticeable that it has been filmed late at night.

Insert/close up shot of "BoothBank Cottage" the name of the cottage Leah goes to for help. Realistic lighting and the background earie music still at the same level.

Low angle shot of Leah climbing over the fence into BoothBank cottage. Streetlight shining on the character and the fence, this shows her actions more visible and has the audience on edge, while questioning "why would she be climbing over a strangers fence?" background music at a steady pace and following the sequence well.

Lastly, there is a tracking shot of Leah running desparatly around the deserted house to find anyone . Panicking a Longshot conveys Leah running towards the camera shouting 'HEY YOU' this leaves us on a cliffhanger with the Title "Misunderstood".

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product can be compared and contrasted to several different real media products. For example: in terms of film titles alone, our title being "Misunderstood" automatically poses a question to the audience as to 'why' and 'who' is misunderstood. This cannot be said for many other film titles. The one word title adjective "Misunderstood" can be compared to the film title "Disturbia" as this also leaves the audiece questioning 'who' and/or 'what' is disturbed.

Our sequence storyline is based upon a religious girl who is over ridden by voices inside her head. As previously stated several times before this connotes extreme religious aspects and personal mental health issues. The storyline to our sequence is far from simple and is based upon a series of complex ideas. This requires great understanding from the audience. This storyline in a way can be compared to the film "The Da Vinci Code" as this is also based on a series of relgious features which have to be discovered by the audience as they aren't obvious. On terms of the high complexity of our storyline, this would evidently challenge the majority of real everyday common media products as they are usually straightforward and require to mental though from the audience.

The main protagnist in our sequence is a female teen, aged around 16/17. She is presented as a calm and reserved individual who keeps herself to herself and takes great interest in her religious lifestyle. Some would say that In a way she somehow greatly subverts the general stereotype for the original everyday teen as for they are usually the total opposite of what this character is. They are generally hyper and dramatic yet our character is opposite this.
An example of the expectant behaviour of an everyday teen is in Legally Blonde. The main female protaganist, who is around the same age as our character is somewhat obsessive of the way she looks and favours her fashionable "party" lifestyle. This is extremely parrallel to our character considering the fact that all she cares about is her religion an wishes to remain peacful within herself and the church. Therefore this would challenge this particular media product but on the otherhand, it perfectly develops it overall. For instiance, in Legally Blonde you instantly make the assumption that the main character will lack common sense and not be very intelluctual. This is also the same in our product as you instantly assume our character is of "normal" mental health yet this is definitely not the case when it is revealed that she hears continous unwated voices. The fact that she goes agaisnt the audiences expectations is a comparision to legally blonde when she subverts all asumptions of her being 'ditsy' and lacking common sense but in realtiy she ends up becoming a lawyer.

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

If our film were to be distributed by a UK British film company it would most likely happen to be distributed by Film 4. Film 4 are a production company who are owned by Channel 4, they produce low budget films which arguable all tend to have an indepth story line which is very similar to our sequence. As a group we believe this would be an ideal distributor for our product as they have been extremely sucessfull in producing films such as: East is East aswell as working in parteniship with Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Millionaire follows an extreme indepth storyline of a Mumbai teenager who has grown up in the slums of Indian and he happens to become a contestant on "who wants to be a millionaire." The storyline seems very basic but the audience are then presented with flashbacks of the teens life. A parrallel can be made to our project as both protaganists undergo a series of flashbacks and certain voices of their past. The only thing that contrasts is the type of genres. Our project is of thriller genre as opposed to Slumdog Millionaire which is mainly drama. This is why as a group we feel Film 4 would be an ideal distributor for our product as they have been sucessfull in distributing a similar storyline previously.

If our product was to be distributed worldwide we agreed as a group that Columbia Pictures would be a definate choice. Columbia Pictures is owned by Sony pictures which also own: Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, Destination Films, TriStar Pictures and more. However, we chose Columbia Pictures because from our knowledge they distributed The Da Vinci Code. Its sequeal Angels and Demons was distributed by Columbia Pictures owenership, Sony Pictures.

The reason why we would be so passionate about Columbia Pictures distributing our product is due to the similarities it has to The Da Vinci Code and how sucessfull that film actually was. The Da Vinci Code is an American mystery thriller as well as it being a worldwide best selling novel. It is about a murder inside the world famous art mueseum, the Louvres. Clues surrounding the murder emerge in Da Vinci paintings which evidently lead to the discovery of religious mysterys which have suprisinly been protected by a secret society for over 2000 years. The film received vast amounts of critism as it was arugable that this film could potentially shake the foundations of christianity.

A comparision can definitely be made to our product as both films contain extreme relgious aspects aswell as pyscholigcal. Both films require a very indepth analytical mind to unfold what could potentially happen later in the film. They both consist of very thorough storylines which requires the audience to pay attention to every detail. However, we have made the religious connotaions more apparent by using a chapel setting as early as the sequence as oppossed to the davinci code seen as religious aspects come later on in the film.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product directly portrays the social group of young adolescents from the age of 15+. The character is around this age also however, within this age group it focuses on a number of different things including a lifestyle of one girl imparticular. The girl in our product was represented to live a life dependent on religion which arguable could have led to her paranoid state, resulting in her hearing the voices which are heard in our sequence.

The girl in our product is part of a religious social group which is arugably not quite common in the 21st century amongst teens nowadays. She therefore subverts the everyday streotype for a teen of our generation as the typical streotype of female teenagers is to be purely interested in fashion/friends/boys etc. However, our character on the other hand has dedicated most of her time to the church and God. Another social group it could represent would be the Mentally ill, Leah appears to be an average teenager to begin with until the voice overs' beigin to differ and reveal the clouded indifference in Leahs mind. Confused by herself and others around her she is Misunderstood. In some ways it can represent Social class... the house in which Leah ran towards was a beautiful building in the countryside, it is for the audience to interpret the class of Leah however we will never find out who lived at that house and why she was there.

Music

The music we chose was very chilling due to the fact the opening scene was thriller based- consisting of a confused girl apparently in some form of danger. From the protagonists point of view she is nervous, confused and in fear therefore to emphasize this the music was edgy and mysterious. We obtained the soundtrack from You tube however the Title was unfortunately unknown. The indisputeable fact about music is its power to evoke emotion and atmosphere, the unexplainable voice overs compliment the frightfull soundtrack and realy benefits the genre
